Title: Hometime
Introducing Payton
What's in your art cup? Tea or coffee?
My go to is a full cream latte with a little honey.
What is the story behind this piece of art?
While spending most of 2021 working in regional northern Queensland, I found myself immersed in the charm of Queenslander homes. Observing them from the street, I couldn’t help but appreciate how each facade exuded a distinct aura of comfort, embodying the essence of both home and its inhabitants. These were homes where the idiosyncratic and expressive characteristics of their owners could truly shine through, manifesting in every nook and cranny. It’s a beautiful testament to the notion that home is truly where you make it.
Why this piece of artwork for the cup?
Amidst the prevailing uncertainty and societal upheaval of recent years, I felt compelled to craft something that captures the essence of finding solace in the familiarity of one’s own abode. I embarked on a journey of colour blocking and employing a collage-style approach to fashion the depiction of a house. Much like the process of adorning one’s dwelling with cherished odds and ends, this endeavour aimed to encapsulate the essence of transforming a mere house into a cherished home.
What have you enjoyed about this project?
There’s a deeply ingrained belief in the power of potential, the idea that with determination, anything is achievable. The Art Cup project embodies this spirit by providing a creative approach in supporting Western Australian artists, irrespective of their experience level. Whether you’re an emerging artist or have been practicing for years, this project offers equal opportunity for all to elevate their art to new heights, presenting it in fresh and innovative ways. This inclusive approach is not only inspiring but also serves as a motivating force, propelling artists like myself to persistently pursue and refine our craft.
"Witnessing firsthand the transformative power of art, I observe daily how it encourages individuals to explore alternative ways of thinking"
Why is it important to support the arts?
Engaging with art not only fosters critical analysis but also serves as a catalyst for challenging perspectives, fostering diverse modes of thought, and cultivating spaces for creative expression. Recently, I’ve embarked on a journey within the realm of art, taking on roles encompassing both customer service and installation at an art gallery. This gallery serves as a hub for education and community engagement, offering workshops, artist talks, tours, and online informational sessions. Witnessing firsthand the transformative power of art, I observe daily how it encourages individuals to explore alternative ways of thinking. I believe that such creative exploration is very important for societal progression and evolution.
